TodayToday I lit a fire in the living room withToday
old school papers and library receipts because
it was too cold to care if the fire alarm went off. Today I drank an entire bottle of wine to myself and lit three candles and smoked a pack of cigarettes in two hours flat. Today I threw out three pens and wrote poetry with the fourth even though it also barely worked, because there wasn't anything else to do
and hasn't been in months.
Yesterday I did laundry at the college and forgot my clothes in the dryer for twenty hours. Today I wore two sweatshirts and tights under my jean
Pain PAINPain
Hangs from your pelvis
like an incomplete, conjoined sibling
with no mind of its own
but enough of yours to make you fear it.
Comes when you are sleeping
to perch on your face and dip its beak
redly into your dreams.
Shucks its claws
on the upholstery of your flesh. Is a fog-eyed poet, reading aloud to you
endless reams of his own passionate,
excruciating verse.
Squats in the waste it has made of you,
a basilisk-child
you dare not look in the eye. Remembers the body when it moved
